The trail is south and east, and that has almost no slope, lots of grass, and coastal land. There is a river running from Mt. Moon that goes northwest. The Cerulean Cave is to the northeast, and above the cave on high ground you can find the Battle Factory.

In Route 4, make it possible for people to go through Mt. Moon backwards.

Hmmm.... Well, the maps certainly are spacious. I personally think though that there is too much grass in route 4. It seems like it's just being used as filler. I'd actually recommend that you only expand these maps if you're going to put to stuff to find in these areas that are "off the beaten path".
I personally find exploring enjoyable, but if there isn't anything to actually see or find, it ruins the whole purpose of exploring. In the official games at least, they rewarded the player with items for exploring. Also, by making the road have no grass break through it, the players won't get attacked. And if the player ventures into the huge patch of grass, they're going to get mauled/pwned by a ton of random encounters. I guess that about sums things up. Yaarr!
